Dutch speedskater Ireen Wuest tied the Olympic record for speedskating gold medals on Monday when she won her first gold of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games and fifth of her career Monday night at the Gangneung Oval. She finished the speedskating women’s 1,500 in 1 minute, 54.35 seconds to edge Japan’s Miho Takagi’s 1:54.55.

With her fifth Olympic gold, Wuest ties a speed skating record

The Netherlands put two more women in the top four, with Marrit Leenstra capturing bronze — while American Brittany Bowe finished in fifth place 1.19 seconds behind Wuest.
Pyeongchang is 31-year-old Wuest’s fourth Olympic Games, as she made her debut as just a 19-year-old in 2006 in Torino, where she earned a bronze in the 1,500. In 2014, she won more medals than any athlete in any sport at the Sochi Games, claiming golds in the 3,000 and team pursuit, while earning silvers in the 1,000, 1,500, and 5,000.
Wuest had already earned a silver two days earlier in the 3,000, finishing just .08 seconds behind teammate Carlijn Achtereekte. She has one more chance at a medal when the women’s team pursuit is held next week. The quarterfinals are set for Monday, Feb. 19, with the gold medal race scheduled for about 8 a.m. ET on Feb. 21.
