Good morning, Olympics pals. We’ve got a LOT to talk about.
Olympics cheat sheet: Team USA won some medals, and we all want ice cream
Here’s what you missed over the weekend in Pyeongchang and what you should watch out for on Monday.

But first, you got your coffee? No? We’ll, I’m brewing plenty so come on by if you need. Because, yeah, the time difference between Pyeongchang (HI, OLYMPICS!) and Brooklyn (HI, ME) is wreaking havoc on my REM cycles.
But, gosh, we watched a lot of SPORTS! this weekend, right?
Oh, you stuck to your normal schedule and just watched the NBC broadcasts in prime-time like a highly functioning adult. Hmm, interesting theory. I know a guy on Team Tape Delay. But I also woke up a few hours ago to watch a live stream of biathlon. So agree to disagree. Either way, let’s get caught up on what happened last night and over the weekend.
The U.S. picked up four total medals (so far), including two golds, between the opening ceremony on Friday night (ET) and Monday morning (ET).
- 17-year-old Red Gerard won men’s snowboarding slopestyle for the first U.S. gold medal of the games. He was born in 2000 and is totally starting to figure out what a big deal the Olympics are.
- Jamie Anderson successfully defended her Sochi 2014 gold medal in women’s snowboarding slopestyle with another gold in 2018.
- Chris Mazdzer won the first Olympic men’s singles luge medal for the United States, grabbing a silver. He also had the (NSFW) support of Olympics superfan Leslie Jones:
- Team USA picked up a bronze medal in the figure skating team event in a dramatic competition that included Mirai Nagasu becoming the first American woman to land a triple axel in the Olympics:
Who else is leading the medal count?
Norway jumped ahead of the crowd early, racking in eight medals over the weekend. Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany have all been within striking distance of the top spot.
Who are our new favorites?
U.S. figure skater Adam Rippon and U.S. snowboarder Chloe Kim have been crushing it in and out of competition so far. Let’s stay tuned for more from both of them. I’ll bring the Xanax and ice cream.
What are we going to watch next?
- Kim is competing in the women’s snowboarding halfpipe final at 8 p.m. ET.
- The men’s snowboarding halfpipe qualifying will be tonight too, after that. Hello, Shaun White.
And...don’t forget:
Check out the complete schedule HERE.
Anything else to keep an eye on?
- Strong winds have forced multiple postponements of skiing events. The elements have also been impacting those snow sports going on as scheduled. Be careful out there, Olympians.
- Don’t forget about the Norovirus. Never stop worrying about Norovirus, and please wash your hands.
Want something to read on the subway or while ignoring your job? Got you.
- One family has made Liechtenstein, a 38,000-person country, an Olympic skiing powerhouse. Liam Boylan-Pett has the story for you.
- Yes, we have the Johnny Weir outfit tracker that you have been looking for. Thank you, James Dator.
- From dad rock to “Despacito,” Rebecca Jennings compiled the most bonkers songs in Olympic figure skating this year.
- Eight U.S. Olympians shared with Zito Madu the stories behind their most gruesome scars.
