The United States has slipped behind the pack a little in the 2018 Winter Olympics medal standings, but it will have a great chance to pick up more gold in Tuesday night’s events. Mikaela Shiffrin and Shaun White are overwhelming favorites in their respective fields, and barring a massive setback, they will boost Team USA’s medal count by the end of the night.
Olympic medal count 2018: United States looking for more gold on Tuesday
Mikaela Shiffrin and Shaun White will look to boost America’s medal count.

Chloe Kim was the breakout star on Monday night, destroying the women’s halfpipe field to get an easy gold medal for the U.S. They doubled up on the podium with Arielle Gold earning the bronze.
America enters Tuesday night currently in fifth place with three golds, one silver, and one bronze.
Norway is first in the overall standings after grabbing a handful of medals on Monday, including gold in the cross country men’s sprint. However, Germany still leads with five gold medals, adding to its count after Natalie Geisenberger won the women’s luge.
As expected, Canada dominated in curling, with the mixed doubles team winning gold. Canada also got bronze in short track speedskating, thanks to Kim Boutin. The Canadians are tied with the Netherlands for second overall.
Speaking of short track, it was a chaotic night at Gangneung Ice Arena. Italy got its first gold medal of these Olympics in women’s 500m, with Arianna Fontana pulling off a shocking upset. The two biggest favorites — Great Britain’s Elise Christie and South Korea’s Choi Min-jeong — both missed the podium after Christie crashed out, while Choi got disqualified for interference. South Korea was expected to dominate the speedskating events, but so far they only have two medals — one gold and one bronze.
On Tuesday:
Shiffrin makes her run for the gold in women’s slalom, while White tries to make up for a disappointing Sochi run in men’s halfpipe. Elsewhere, figure skating picks back up with the pairs short program.
