While her American teammates both had the opportunity get some of their nerves out in the team figure skating event earlier in the 2018 Winter Olympics, the first time Karen Chen takes the ice in competition will be Tuesday night during the ladies’ short program. She’s set to perform the fourth group, with a start time of approximately 11:05 p.m. ET. You can watch on NBC, or live stream the event on your PC or mobile device.

More from the Winter Olympics
Chen was the 2017 U.S. champion and finished third at the 2018 U.S. championships to earn her placement on the team. Chen’s inclusion on the team might be seen by some as controversial, as she narrowly bested 2014 Olympian Ashley Wagner for the honor. But Wagner’s inclusion on the 2014 team itself was controversial, as she actually finished fourth that year as well, bumping Nagasu from Sochi. This year, the committee that selects the team decided the best way to go was to use the national championship standings from January as its guide.
Her personal best for this season in the short program is 66.18. Combined with a free skate best 123.27, Chen enters the competition on the wrong side of the top 10. But that’s just history. None of that will matter to Chen when she takes the ice.
When she does, the self described “shy” 18-year-old will try to put the nerves behind her by feeding off the crowd to put on the best show of her career.
“To hear the audience cheer for me and scream actually made me feel so much better,” she said about her performance last month, via NBC.
She earned a bronze then in San Jose. We’ll see what she can do in Pyeongchang.
