By now you’ve probably heard Fergie’s rendition of the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game, or at least heard about it. She went with a rather unique and, um, guttural approach to the tune, and it left players on the court, viewers at home, and Twitter savants in tears.
Can you spell this line from Fergie’s national anthem?
Banner yet wave, or ba-yan-nur-yuh ye ye way hayve?

Because I’m washed, I was a glass of Pinot Noir and a swig of ZzzQuil deep about an hour before Fergie even hit the stage. Thus, I relied on SB Nation’s Instagram page this morning to keep me up to date on all of the previous night’s sports happenings (hit the link and follow us, bih).
Amidst my groggy morning scroll I was stopped dead in my tracks by an isolated six-second-soundbite:
What is she saying? How is this specific arrangement of sounds humanly possible? WHICH PART OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS THIS EVEN? It’s not that I hate it, it’s that I genuinely don’t understand it, and I want to. I want to, Fergie.
With a hat tip to Harry Lyles Jr., I took to Twitter to see who else couldn’t quite put their finger on this specific excerpt.
The results did not disappoint.
We’re all in this together.
