Behold the glorious fiver that won USA curling its first Olympic gold medal
John Shuster and the U.S. men’s curling team defeated Sweden to win gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The U.S. men’s curling team defeated Sweden, 10-7, to win a historic gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday. After a disastrous start to the Olympic tournament in Pyeongchang, John Shuster led his “Team of Rejects” to the first curling gold medal in U.S. history.
With the score even, 5-5, into the eighth end, Shuster doubled his team’s score in dramatic fashion. The final throw from the U.S. skipper, who performed so poorly in the 2014 Olympics that he was dropped from the team, knocked out two Swedish stones to secure a rare five-ender.
“During the entire end we could kind of feel it building. Their margin for error got really small,” Shuster told reporters after the win, via The Associated Press. “I can’t tell you how un-nervous I was sitting in the hack to throw it. Just let it go.”
Team USA — comprised of Shuster and teammates Tyler George, Matt Hamilton, and John Landsteiner with alternate Joe Polo — would hold on for the stunning win.
