With a 26-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal, the New England Patriots snapped a dubious streak of slow starts in the Super Bowl. It was the first time under Bill Belichick that the Patriots scored points at all in the first quarter in a Super Bowl.
Patriots score in the 1st quarter of Super Bowl for the 1st time under Bill Belichick
In the Patriots’ first seven trips to the Super Bowl under Bill Belichick, the team scored a grand total of zero points.

That’s right. Not once in the Patriots’ first seven trips to the Super Bowl with Belichick and Tom Brady did the team score a single first-quarter point.
Last year, the Patriots and Atlanta Falcons played a 0-0 first quarter. The Falcons exploded with 21 points in the second quarter on the way to a 28-3 lead, but the Patriots came back to force overtime and win, 34-28.
The Philadelphia Eagles struck first with a field goal on their opening drive, but for the first time, the Patriots are on the board early too. They began the second quarter on the doorstep of adding more, but Gostkowski missed a 26-yard field goal off the left goal post.
