There are just 12 NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl

And then there were 12.

Until Super Bowl LII, the Eagles were one of 13 NFL teams that had never won a Super Bowl. That all changed with Philly’s improbable win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII. That should give hope to fans of the other 12 teams still waiting for a Lombardi Trophy.

Philadelphia had been to two Super Bowls before the 2018 season. They lost to the Raiders, 27-10, in Super Bowl XV following the 1980 season. Their other loss came to none other than the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX 18 years ago. New England won, 24-21.

The Eagles got another shot in Super Bowl LII to beat the Patriots, a team that ended up with with nine Super Bowl appearances and six wins during the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. That’s the very definition of an underdog. This was, after all, a Patriots team that pulled off the biggest Super Bowl comeback ever against the Falcons in Super Bowl LI after Atlanta jumped out to a 28-3 lead. The Pats won 34-28 in overtime.

The Eagles also had to hold off a furious Patriots’ rally, but unlike the Falcons, they did it and finally got a championship. Maybe one of these other teams can take their name off the list next.

Here are the 12, in alphabetical order:

Arizona Cardinals
Super Bowl losses: 1

In 2008, the Cardinals won the NFC West with a 9-7 record and made it past the Falcons and Panthers before knocking out the Eagles in the NFC Championship. That earned the Cardinals their first trip to a Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XLIII, the Cardinals took a late lead thanks to a long touchdown from Kurt Warner to Larry Fitzgerald. But the Steelers got the ball back and Ben Roethlisberger led a game-winning drive featuring a circus catch in the end zone by Santonio Holmes. The Steelers won, 27-23.

Atlanta Falcons
Super Bowl losses: 2

The Falcons have one of the worst losses in Super Bowl history, that blown 25-point lead to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. But their other loss is pretty rough, too. Against all odds, they took care of the nearly unstoppable Vikings, who finished the 1998 season 15-1, in the NFC Championship.

But then star cornerback Eugene Robinson — who broke up what would have been a game-winning touchdown to Randy Moss in the 30-27 win over Minnesota — got arrested for trying to solicit sex from an undercover cop the night before the Broncos beat Atlanta down, 34-19.

Buffalo Bills
Super Bowl losses: 4

Imagine seeing your team go to four Super Bowls and lose them all. Now imagine those four Super Bowls all happened in consecutive seasons. That’s the life of Bills fans. They saw their team suffer an excruciating 20-19 loss in the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance following the 1990 season when kicker Scott Norwood’s game-winning field goal attempt went wide right.

That’s their only Super Bowl showdown that was close. They lost to Washington, 37-24, in 1992, and then the Cowboys beat them, 52-17 and 30-13, in back-to-back Super Bowls.

But the Bills snapped a 17-year playoff drought in 2017, so maybe there’s another shot at a championship in Buffalo’s near future.

Carolina Panthers
Super Bowl losses: 2

The Panthers are one of five teams that have had their Super Bowl dreams crushed by Tom Brady and the Patriots. It happened in the team’s first Super Bowl bid in 2004, when they lost to New England, 32-29. Jake Delhomme managed to tie things up with a touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl with just over a minute left to play. But the king of the playoff game-winning drive, Brady, got the Patriots into field goal range. Adam Vinatieri won it with just four seconds left on the clock.

The Panthers got another chance after finishing the 2015 season 15-1 and locking up the top seed in the NFC. They fell to the Broncos thanks to a dominant defensive effort from Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller and company, who sacked Cam Newton six times and recovered three fumbles in Denver’s 24-10 win.

Cincinnati Bengals
Super Bowl losses: 3

Bengals fans might still have some hard feelings toward the 49ers. San Francisco beat the Bengals in each of their appearances. Super Bowl XVI, after the 1981 season, was the beginning of the Joe Montana-Bill Walsh dynasty in San Francisco. They beat the Bengals, 26-21.

The teams faced off again in Super Bowl XXIII seven years later. The Niners were trailing, 16-13, in the fourth quarter when Montana led an 85-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Jerry Rice to get the 20-16 win.

The Bengals finally made it back to the big game following the 2022 season, buoyed by strong defensive play and Cincinnati’s talented offense, led by quarterback Joe Burrow. They lost to the Rams 23-20.

Los Angeles Chargers
Super Bowl losses: 1

The Chargers made it to the Super Bowl following the 1994 season, but they were an 18.5-point underdog against Steve Young’s 49ers. So it wasn’t a huge surprise that San Francisco ran away with this one, 49-26. Still, that loss had to sting for the Chargers.

Minnesota Vikings
Super Bowl losses: 4

The Vikings came one game short of adding another Super Bowl appearance to their resume this postseason. Nick Foles and the Eagles knocked them out of contention with their 38-7 beatdown in the NFC Championship, costing the Vikings the chance to be the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

The Vikings’ four Super Bowl showings haven’t been particularly competitive. They lost to the Chiefs, 23-7, in Super Bowl IV after the 1969 season. The Dolphins beat them, 24-7, in Super Bowl VII just one year after Miami’s perfect 1972 season. The Steelers won, 16-6, in Super Bowl IX in 1975. The Raiders completed the sweep two years later with a 32-14 win in Super Bowl XI.

Tennessee Titans
Super Bowl losses: 1

The Titans have been to just one Super Bowl in team history, and it was a heartbreaker. They were trailing the Rams, 23-16, late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXXIV after the 1999 season, and Steve McNair hit Kevin Dyson in the red zone. It looked like Dyson had linebacker Mike Jones beat for a game-winning score, but Jones stopped him short of the goal line.

The Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars have never made it to a Super Bowl. Things were looking up for the Jaguars, who made it all the way to the AFC Championship following the 2018 season and would have beaten the Patriots if not for a classic Brady playoff comeback. The future’s looking bright for the Jags once again after their incredible 30-31 comeback win over the Chargers in this year’s Wild Card round.

The Lions have struggled in recent years, but have dramatically improved in Year 2 under head coach Dan Campbell. They narrowly missed the postseason following the 2022 season, finishing with a record of 9-8.

The Browns experienced a bit of a resurgence after years of irrelevancy with Baker Mayfield under center, making the playoffs following the 2020 season and knocking out the Steelers in the Wild Card round. They fell to the Chiefs in the divisional round. The trade for Deshaun Watson and his 11-game suspension set the team back in 2022, and they finished last in the AFC North with a 7-10 record.

The Texans are a mess and finished 3-13 in 2022. They fired head coach Lovie Smith, and are once again starting over with new leadership and a lot of roster holes to fill. Sorry, Houston fans, but you might be waiting a while for your shot at a championship.
