6 reasons Josh McDaniels should have coached the Colts

He’s really messing up here.

Josh McDaniels took one last trick from Bill Belichick, and snubbed the Indianapolis Colts after initially accepting their head coaching job. He’s been a great student to Belichick, really.

The Colts now get to frantically search for a new head coach just a couple of weeks before the NFL Combine takes place, and the NFL draft happens in late April. It’s not an ideal situation for them, but apparently Robert Kraft did just enough to keep his offensive coordinator (and stick it to the Colts for Deflategate).

McDaniels’ agent said he was making a huge mistake by leaving so early, and time will tell on that. For now, here’s some reasons why McDaniels should have coached the Colts.

He could have built a lasting legacy.

Tony Dungy is going to be one of the more revered coaches in Indianapolis Colts’ history because he brought them their first and (up to the publishing of this article) only Super Bowl. After him, we really only remember Jim Mora because of all the funny moments he had during press conferences. Well, really just the PLAYOFFS.

While we aren’t certain of Andrew Luck’s injury status, the Colts also have the No. 3 pick in a draft where it’s expected that four quarterbacks go in — at the very least — the top 10. So whether or not he thought Luck was going to be fine, he could have selected from a nice crop of talent.

To build on that, along with new general manager Chris Ballard, who seems to be doing a fairly nice job of turning Ryan Grigson’s dumpster fire of a job into gold, and McDaniels would have been in a nice situation. He would have built a name and legacy for himself that would have made him a football hero in a basketball state — much like Peyton Manning did.

The NFL Combine is held at Lucas Oil Stadium.

McDaniels could roll out of bed and go watch future NFL players in February. Easy.

Steak and Shake is headquartered there.

Some people aren’t fans of Steak and Shake, which is fine. But if McDaniels is young-ish for an NFL head coach, and if he has any type of personality in Indy, he could have gotten a nice little sponsorship.

I mean, if I’m McDaniels I’m trying to make that happen. The garlic burger they’ve got at Steak and Shake is incredibly delicious, even if it is doing some serious work on my heart.

He could have had the Indianapolis 500 in his backyard.

I don’t really care about this, but it’s something you have to experience, you know?

Victor Oladipo is really, really good at basketball.

The Indiana Pacers aren’t going to win the NBA Finals or anything, but for a current six-seed in the Eastern Conference, they’re loads of fun. Oladipo is a huge part of that, and he’d be right there to enjoy it all.

Oladipo has also become a Jim Halpert-esque meme. I’m not sure about you, but if I could, I’d like to live in a city with a meme-able basketball player (I live in Atlanta, the Hawks are just plain bad).

[extremely Twitter user voice] When you say you’re going to coach the Colts, and then go back to the Patriots:

Sure, Boston has the Celtics and tons of young talent who will dominate the Eastern Conference and possibly the NBA once the Warriors are done.

But it’s not Oladipo, so....

If they ever bring back Parks and Rec, he could be in an episode.

First thing: if you’ve never watched Parks and Rec, change that.

Second thing: McDaniels would be in prime position to be in a reboot of the show. If they let crusty ol’ Jim Irsay in the episode, there’s no way McDaniels isn’t getting an appearance.

They won’t be able to top this, sure:

But it’s something he could have added to the resume. They’re apparently bringing The Office back, so Parks and Rec could happen as well. They’re like the same show, just a different setting.

McDaniels should have accepted the Colts job for all of these very serious reasons. He will regret it when he’s in New England being chewed out by 40-year-old Tom Brady, and Seth Wickersham airs him out at some point if he ever becomes head coach.
