Any team that wants Kirk Cousins will have to pony up a record amount of cash to make it happen. But Cousins has insisted that it isn’t just about the money for him. So the deciding factor in Cousins’ NFL future might end up being how enthusiastically his new teammates recruited him.
Kirk Cousins is being recruited by Larry Fitzgerald, Von Miller, and even Blake Shelton
Cousins will be the hottest quarterback in free agency, and his potential new teammates are leaving nothing to chance.

The best landing spot for Cousins is the most persistent topic of conversation in the NFL news cycle these days. Even Cousins and his adorable tiny baby don’t know where that might be.
But players on teams that desperately need some stability at the quarterback position — the Browns, Broncos, and Cardinals in particular (the Jets need to step it up!) — are already pulling out the stops to try to convince Cousins to be their teammate next season.
Joe Thomas is the Browns’ best ambassador
On the surface, taking over at quarterback for a team that went 0-16 last year probably isn’t that appealing. But the Browns have talent at other positions, plus 12 draft picks and over $108 million in cap space to work with this offseason. What they need most is a quarterback. The lack of consistency at that position was a big part of the reason the team couldn’t win.
A player like Cousins could change this team’s trajectory quickly, and left tackle Joe Thomas knows it.
Thomas is going into the 12th season of his NFL career, all of which he’s spent in Cleveland. The team has finished with a winning record exactly once, when they went 10-6 back in 2007 and — in true Browns fashion — still managed to miss the playoffs.
Thomas is one of the best left tackles in the NFL, and he deserves to win. Maybe Cousins could make that happen.
The Broncos (especially Von Miller) are putting a full-court press on Cousins
Von Miller knows how talented his Broncos defense is. The team is really just a quarterback away from getting back into Super Bowl contention. And Miller is willing to stop at nothing to get Cousins on board.
Miller’s playing up anything he has in common with Cousins
That means that Miller is willing to like anything that Cousins does. Cousins likes rainbows.
So guess what? Miller’s a big fan of rainbows, too.
Rainbows aren’t the only thing Miller and Cousins have in common. Kirk loves cereal: Frosted Mini Wheats and Cracklin’ Oat Bran, to be precise.
Hey, so does Von Miller.
Cousins appreciate’s Miller’s interest in him.
“It’s flattering to hear a player of Von’s caliber speak nicely of me,” Cousins told TMZ Sports. “It’s always nice to be wanted.”
Well, Miller REALLY wants Cousins to come to the Broncos.
He’s still using Instagram to try to influence Cousins’ decision.
Miller’s got some recruiting help on the other side of the ball
C.J. Anderson also would like Cousins to join him in Denver.
“It would be huge having a guy like Kirk. Veteran guy, been through it. It would be huge to come to us, a veteran team,” the running back said on NFL Network. “We know some pieces are going to change, but if we can keep some of the pieces on our offensive end — myself, Emmanuel (Sanders), (Demaryius Thomas) — our offense can be what we want it to be.”
Oh, speaking of Sanders ...
Thomas and Sanders are talented receivers, and John Elway has made it clear they aren’t going anywhere. All the Broncos are really missing is a quarterback.
The Cardinals are getting help from Larry Fitzgerald ... and the guy from The Voice
With Carson Palmer officially retired and Larry Fitzgerald deserving a decent quarterback for what is probably the last season of his Hall of Fame career, Cousins and the Cardinals could be a match — just ask one of their biggest fans.
Blake Shelton joined the fray
Country singer and The Voice personality Blake Shelton doesn’t play for the Cardinals, but he sure does love the team.
“We want you in Arizona,” Shelton said during a pre-Super Bowl interview on NBC, according to AZ Central. “We want you to be the quarterback of the Cardinals.”
When Shelton says “we,” there are some Cardinals players in the mix, including Fitzgerald.
Cardinals players want Cousins, too
Fitz said on the Dan Patrick Show during the week of the Super Bowl exactly how he would try to sweeten the deal for Cousins to join him in Arizona.
“I know you’re an avid golfer, similar to me,” Fitzgerald said. “I can get you tee times at any place you want there.”
Fitzgerald didn’t waste the opportunity when he ran into Cousins at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta recently.
Cornerback Patrick Peterson also wants to see Cousins in Arizona.
“Why not, I believe Kirk can definitely get us over the top,” Peterson said on ESPN’s First Take. “He’ll be in warm weather, playing on one of the best turfs in the NFL. He’ll have some great talent around him, running game, receivers, tight end, you name it. We have everything that he needs to be successful.”
David Johnson will be back from injury next year, and Fitzgerald will delay retirement for at least one more season.
Speaking of Johnson:
The Cardinals managed to go 8-8 despite losing Johnson and Palmer to injuries last season. Cousins could get the team back into contention in the NFC West.
Stefon Diggs and Kyle Rudolph are being subtle
They’re not actively recruiting Cousins, but they’ve got their eyes on him:
Rumors — quickly refuted — emerged Tuesday that the Vikings were considering a fully guaranteed three-year, $91 million deal for Cousins. Running back Jerick McKinnon (who is set to be a free agent himself) seemed to be on board with that.
Cousins would be an upgrade for any of these teams, and the recruitment efforts probably won’t slow down until he decides where he’ll be playing next season.
