ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday morning that Tom Brady has yet to commit to playing next season, though people around him “believe he will back for the coming season.”
Tom Brady reportedly isn’t committed to playing for the Patriots in 2018. He’ll probably play
This sounds pretty normal, by all accounts.

Schefter goes on to write that, “There’s no question that Brady wants to play football,” next season. He then lists out the reasons you’d expect for him to retire: he turns 41 in August, he wants to spend time with his family, and people around him want to see him retire. Typical stuff for a guy his age in the NFL.
There was also the idea that Brady and Rob Gronkowski could be tired of playing for Bill Belichick, based on a Gronk Instagram post and caption, and a Brady stamp of approval.
Here’s the post, where Gronk tells Amendola, “Stay lit, Be FREE, Be HAPPY”:
Brady replied to the post saying, “Well said gronk!!!!” Though in fairness and knowing Gronk, that could entirely be a reference to the Miami nightlife, which would be something Gronk would say. But words will be spun and assumptions will be made. After all, Brady’s made this thing work since 2000, and Gronk’s clearly worried about his health.
Schefter also mentions that Brady missed the start of New England’s offseason program, but that’s not a rarity either. He’s done it three times before, and well, he’s old for an NFL player. He’s also one of the best quarterbacks of all time and probably doesn’t need to show up anyway.
And to throw some salt on the wound opened up by ESPN’s Seth Wickersham:
Brady is planning to spend more time this offseason with body coach Alex Guerrero.
Some around the Patriots organization might not still be happy about that.
All of this by Schefter, to ultimately say that the lack of “clarity” from Brady could make the Patriots be more aggressive in acquiring another quarterback, since Brian Hoyer is currently the heir-apparent. The Patriots have two first-round picks and two second-round picks, one of which could be used on a quarterback.
But will Brady play next season? Probably.
