4 quarterbacks went top 10 in the NFL Draft for the first time in almost 70 years

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen all landed in the top 10.

The last time four quarterbacks went in the top 10 was 1949 with John Rauch, Stan Heath, Bobby Thomason and Frank Tripucka going to the Lions, Packers, Rams and Eagles, respectively. That number was matched Thursday night with the first four-quarterback top 10 in modern NFL Draft history.

It was Baker Mayfield to the Cleveland Browns at No. 1, Sam Darnold to the New York Jets at No. 3, Josh Allen to the Buffalo Bills at No. 7, and Josh Rosen to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 10.

The early run on passers meant the record for quarterbacks taken in the first round was also within reach. Six went in the 1983 class that included Hall of Famers John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino. But the only other quarterback to go in the first round was Lamar Jackson, who went No. 32 to the Baltimore Ravens.

While it didn’t match 1983, it was still the first time since 1999 that five quarterbacks went in the first round.

There are reasons to be skeptical about the 2018 NFL Draft’s class of passers. But no matter how they do as professionals, Thursday is a night that will be remembered as one of the most significant night of quarterback investments ever.
