Mr. Irrelevant 2018: Trey Quinn is 2018’s last NFL draft pick

Southern Methodist wide receiver Trey Quinn is Mr. Irrelevant of the 2018 NFL Draft after getting picked by Washington with the very last pick, No. 256 overall.

That sounds like a mean title for a player who earned a spot in the NFL, but it comes with plenty of perks. Quinn will now get a trip to Disneyland that comes with an arrival party and other festivities. He will also receive the Lowsman Trophy — a parody of the Heisman Trophy — and a custom Rolex watch.

The Atlanta Falcons originally owned the No. 256 pick, but traded it to the Los Angeles Rams, who then flipped it to Washington.

The Mr. Irrelevant tradition was started by Paul Salata, a former 49ers and Colts receiver, who was taken in the 10th round of the 1951 NFL Draft — a time when there were 30 rounds in the NFL Draft. While he wasn’t the last pick, he kicked off a tradition that turned the final pick into a spectacle.

For the players lucky enough to get picked into that spotlight, it kicks off a whirlwind week that some of the former Mr. Irrelevants have described as joining a “brotherhood.”

Players who have become Mr. Irrelevant have rarely contributed, though. Among the most notable selections with the last pick are:

  • Titans kicker Ryan Succop, the No. 256 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft
  • Former Rams linebacker David Vobora, the No. 252 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft
  • Former Patriots linebacker Marty Moore, the No. 222 pick in the 1994 NFL Draft

It’s not exactly a star-studded list.

Last year, the Denver Broncos used the pick to add Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly to the quarterback room. He’s still on the roster, but it seems like a long shot for Kelly to supplant Case Keenum and Paxton Lynch for play time.

Quinn will also have an uphill climb to see the field or even the roster in Washington. But at the very least, he’ll get a trip to Disneyland, a new watch, and will forever belong in the fraternity of last picks.
