Verne Lundquist’s ‘YES!’ punctuates Jordan Spieth’s birdie on 16 at the Masters

Jordan Spieth is in the process of an incredible comeback on Sunday at the Masters, and his 33-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole brought him to a tie for the lead at 14-under. But what made it a Masters moment was yet another memorable call by Verne Lundquist.

Spieth started his day at 5-under.

Lundquist said just one word to call the shot: “YES!!!” But that was enough, and when this highlight is played in future years that call will be indistinguishable from the putt itself.

It’s classic Verne, whose calls of Jack Nicklaus on 17 in 1986 (“Maybe ... YES SIR!”) and of Tiger Woods’ chip on 16 in 2005 (“Here it comes ... Oh my goodness ... OH WOW! IN your life have you ever seen anything like that?”) will live on for years.

Maybe this call will, too.
