Dustin Johnson’s hot start at the U.S. Open came to an abrupt halt after his tee shot on the sixth hole. Actually, his whole group came to a halt while Johnson, a handful of spectators and officials, and even Tiger Woods joined forces for a 30-person, seven-minute search for the world’s top-ranked player’s ball.
It took 30 people and Tiger Woods to find a Dustin Johnson U.S. Open tee shot
The rough at Shinnecock Hills is serious business.

The ball remained lost in the fescue until Sky Sports reporter Rich Beem stumbled upon it — literally. He only found Johnson’s errant shot after stepping on it in the middle of the search. The top-ranked golfer was then granted a drop; 10 minutes after his tee shot, he punched a safe shot out to the fairway before settling for a bogey on the par four.
It curtailed a statement-making opening that featured back-to-back birdies on the previous two holes. It shouldn’t affect him too badly, however. Johnson finished the sixth hole in a tie for first place at -1 thanks to insanely difficult conditions at the already notoriously-difficult links at Shinnecock Hills.
