Money in the Bank (MITB) isn’t officially one of the WWE’s four major PPV events — but it should be. The ladder-intensive show not only offers some of the most exciting matches we’ll see all year, but the contracts won Sunday will drive the company’s top storylines over the course of the next year.

There will be two MITB matches at this year’s broadcast, one for the men and one for the women. In each case, the entrant who unclips the briefcase dangled 15 feet over the ring will get the contract within, which guarantees a future title shot at a time of the holder’s choosing. That typically carries a success rate of ~95% for the challenger, but it’s no guarantee that it will end with a championship reign. 2017 winner Baron Corbin proved that when he became just the third winner to cash-in his contract and then lose.

He won’t have the chance to redeem himself in 2018. This year’s men’s field includes Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, the Miz, Bobby Roode, Rusev, Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens, and one member from the New Day — either Big E, Kofi Kingston, or Xavier Woods. That leaves no room for the man currently serving as the Constable of Monday Night Raw — though it’s safe to say he’ll make an appearance at some point Sunday.

The women’s match is equally stacked. Former WWE divas Natalya and Naomi will battle against some of the stars who made women’s wrestling main event-worthy for the company: Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and to a lesser extent, Alexa Bliss. Former NXT champion Ember Moon will attempt to leave her mark on the big leagues with a win and, uh, Lana will also participate.

Other matches include Asuka performing a ritual sacrifice of Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella — who coincidentally won her title thanks to a MITB contract and could wind up retaining via James Ellsworth shenanigans, Ronda Rousey fighting for the Raw Women’s Championship despite making her in-ring debut just two months ago, and the merciful ends (hopefully) of the Daniel Bryan-Big Cass and Bobby Lashley-Sami Zayn feuds.

This year’s event comes after a rare lull for the company. The Wrestlemania corridor was jam-packed with events; a five-week stretch that included the sport’s marquee event, the Greatest Royal Rumble, and Backlash. There’s hasn’t been a PPV since May 6th, which means there’s been lots of buildup to hype rivalries and try to convince us that maybe Roman Reigns-Jinder Mahal won’t just be an excuse to hit the bathroom early.
