Phil Mickelson’s ironic celebration on Sunday at the U.S. Open was performance art

Are you mad about Phil’s illegal rake job on the 13th green yesterday? Too bad! Phil doesn’t seem to care!

For the past 24 hours, perhaps the story of the U.S. Open hasn’t even quite been the course or the leaders so far. It’s been Phil Mickelson — who finished his tournament hours before the leaders teed off on Sunday afternoon.

Talking to some, you’d think Phil committed a crime against humanity when quickly whacking his still-rolling-away-from-him golf ball back toward the cup on the 13th hole in Shinnecock yesterday.

He was given a two-shot penalty for the action, as expected and as he knew. Still, we’ve had 24 hours of weapons-grade hot-takery over What Phil’s Actions Mean For the Game, his candor in apologizing, whether he should’ve been disqualified for a material breach, so on, so forth. It’s somewhat exhausting. For example, here’s some nice Brit anger from the Fox broadcast:

Back at the scene of that alleged crime, here’s how he returned to the 13th today.

That’s classic tongue-in-cheek Phil stuff. He’s leaning into the takes, and if we’re gonna do this, I enjoy his willingness to play heel. Viva Phil.
