For the 90 minutes that Iceland and Nigeria face off in a World Cup group stage match on Friday, the teams will be at odds. But a gesture from Iceland earlier in the tournament showed there are connections deeper than the standings.
Iceland shares touching message of support for Nigeria’s Carl Ikeme
The Super Eagles goalkeeper is not in Russia after he was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 2017.

A day after holding Argentina to a historic draw, Iceland’s Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and his teammates shared a message of support for Nigerian international goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 2017.
On June 17, Bodvarsson tweeted a picture of the Icelandic squad holding an Icelandic jersey with the name “Ikeme” and the No. 1. The tweet read:
All of us in @footballiceland are with you @Carl_Ikeme
Check out the tweet.
Ikeme was unable to travel with the team to Russia for the World Cup, but Nigeria still recognized him with an honorary place as the 24th man of the squad.
Bodvarsson, a former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate of Ikeme, led the Icelandic effort to show support for the Nigerian goalkeeper.
