The Trail Blazers blew the Lakers out of Las Vegas to win the Summer League Finals

This one wasn’t even close.

The Lakers had all the hype entering Tuesday’s Summer League Finals matchup against the Trail Blazers. Josh Hart had just won Summer League MVP. Rookie Svi Mykhailiuk couldn’t miss from the floor, and Los Angeles looked like a team that was en route to winning back-to-back summertime crowns.

But hype goes out the window when your shot-makers don’t make shots. After Hart lit into the Cavaliers for 37 points in the semifinals, he shot just 3-of-12 from the field in a dreadful night that ended with an ejection off a technical foul. After Mykhailiuk also scored 31, including stepback three-pointers, against the Cavs, the rookie fell back to Earth for a 3-of-10 shooting night. And ultimately, after the Trail Blazers jumped out to an 11-point lead midway through the first quarter, they never looked back.

Portland led by as many as 24 points in a 91-73 win over Los Angeles for the Summer League championship. The Trail Blazers had as veteran of a summertime roster as you’ll find, including nine players with NBA experience. Archie Goodwin, for example, holds the record for most points scored in Summer League history. Wade Baldwin IV and John Jenkins each hit two threes, and even though Gary Trent Jr. missed all six of his triples, Portland outscored Los Angeles by 11 in his minutes on the floor thanks to his hustle on both ends of the ball.

The Trail Blazers pulled away with six players who scored in double figures. Summer League Finals MVP K.J. McDaniels scored 16 points off the bench, including several rim-rattling dunks. And even though second-year man Caleb Swanigan only scored seven points, his nine rebounds and five assists were a reminder of why his offense is comparable to Draymond Green. Portland outscored Los Angeles by a game-high 24 points in the 22 minutes Swanigan spent on the floor.

The Lakers and Trail Blazers have now met in the Summer League Finals for the second year in a row, and they’ve split the series at one apiece. This probably isn’t a rivalry that’ll spill into the regular season, but if they meet for a third time next summer, things should get very fun.
