MLB’s Twitter account made the biggest error of the night

Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball would love to talk about the trade deadline action, but we regret to inform you that the bad tweets are back again.

It sure would be nice to simply talk about the upcoming MLB trade deadline. After all, there are plenty of actual trades and juicy rumors floating around and the deadline itself is only a few days away. That’s exciting! That’s fun! What isn’t exciting or fun at all is a tweet that MLB’s official Twitter account sent out last night. While I appreciate that they’re trying to promote the game using one of their legends and one of their up-and-coming stars in the same image, let’s just say that this isn’t exactly the best way to go about doing so.

Yikes! Although MLB did make sure to get the dumb tweet off of their page, screenshots still live forever as you can plainly see. There’s really not much you could do to defend the joke in the tweet, either. Shohei Ohtani and Ichiro Suzuki don’t really have a comparable skill set when it comes to how they play the game, so the only reason why that particular meme would be used in reference to them is because it’s an old and tired joke about how all Japanese people (or Asian people in general) look alike.

It’s one of those things where you figure that you have to give them a tiny bit of credit for deleting it as quickly as they did, but you can’t really give them too much credit because that shouldn’t have even floated onto their page to begin with. Plus, the whole point of Sung Min Kim’s take on the matter is that had a person of color even been near whoever was sending out that tweet, it probably would have never even made it onto the internet and I wouldn’t be be talking about with you here on Saturday morning.

Between Josh Hader’s tweets coming to light and some other problematic recent tweets from MLB’s official account (such as this one) coming and going, it hasn’t been the best of times for MLB when it comes to using the internet for PR. If they’re going to be serious about making the game inclusive and welcoming to everybody, then maybe cleaning up their act on a platform like that would be something that they need to address.

  • The Nationals went into this season as the overwhelming favorites in the NL East. Against all odds, they’re probably going to be in third place as the trade deadline arrives. Should they sell? Grant Brisbee doesn’t think so.
  • The Red Sox were in a dogfight with the Minnesota Twins for a second night in a row. While they lost on Thursday, Mookie Betts made sure that there wouldn’t be two losses in a row as he hit a walk-off dinger in extra innings to give Boston yet another win.
  • Now it’s time to talk about trades. Let’s start with the Brewers getting Mike Moustakas from the Royals (and shout-out to this random fan for being the first one to break the news!)
  • The Brewers weren’t the only contender to be active on the trade market. The Phillies got a deal done as well, as they acquired Asdrubal Cabrera from the Mets.
  • We aren’t done with the trade action! The Diamondbacks were busy too, as they snapped up Eduardo Escobar from the Twins.
  • The Braves haven’t made a major trade yet but there are rumblings that they could swoop in for Adrian Beltre. Talking Chop figures that he would be a perfect fit for Atlanta.
  • Aaron Judge is going to be out of action for at least three weeks, and that could be crucial for New York with regards to the AL East divisional race. Pinstripe Alley tried to figure out how they could survive this important period.
  • The Royals are very likely going to be sellers once the deadline comes and goes, but it appears that they’re planning on hanging on to Whit Merrifield, at least.
  • Finally, there are so many trades going on and so many rumors floating around that it’s important to completely kill all your hopes and dreams when it comes to these untradeable contracts.
