Aaron Rodgers is the NFL’s highest-paid player once again, with whoa, $100 million in guaranteed money

The Packers threw Rodgers his bag, one we all saw coming.

After seeing other quarterbacks sign their share of pricey contracts this offseason, Aaron Rodgers is getting his moment. The Packers signed the two-time NFL MVP to a four-year extension, $134 million extension that will keep him in green and gold through 2023.

The reported extension will push the guarantees from that deal to more than $100 million, according to NFL Network analyst and former teammate James Jones. Jones, who connected with the Green Bay QB for a league-high 14 touchdown catches in 2012, was the reporter Rodgers promised would be the first to break any extension news back in July.

Rodgers, unsurprisingly, was pretty happy with the news, declaring himself a #packerforlife on Instagram.

Rodgers was the highest-paid player in the league when he signed a five-year, $100 million extension in 2013. He held the title of the NFL’s richest quarterback until after 2015 season, when players like Andrew Luck, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, and Kirk Cousins all inked more lucrative deals. But Rodgers’ value to Green Bay may never have been higher than it was after the team saw what its future could be like without him; the Packers were 4-2 in games he finished last fall and just 3-7 in games where since-traded backup Brett Hundley threw the bulk of the team’s passes.

This isn’t shocking.

Not-so-breaking news: Rodgers is really good. The Packers knew a massive extension was coming — they said as much at the NFL Combine in April.

“We’d certainly like to get it done sooner rather than later,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said. “When you have the best player in the National Football League, it’s not going to be inexpensive. Obviously Aaron is a high priority, he’s a great player, and that should take care of itself at some point.”

Rodgers has proven to be one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Whether he’s leading the Packers to a Super Bowl victory or returning from injury to lift them from 4-6 to a 10-6 record like he did in 2016, he’s proven himself as a generational talent.

While he’s 34, but hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down when healthy. Since his first All-Pro season in 2011, Rodgers has thrown for no fewer than 31 touchdowns in each season where he played at least 15 games. He was an early MVP frontrunner last fall after throwing 13 touchdown passes in his first five starts, but a crushing tackle from the VikingsAnthony Barr squashed that hype and ultimately ruined Green Bay’s postseason hopes.

Are there injury concerns with Rodgers?

Rodgers is coming off of a broken collarbone he suffered against the Vikings in Week 6. He came back in Week 15 hoping to make another miraculous playoff push, but fell short in a loss against the Panthers.

The Packers placed him on IR for the remainder of the season after that game, but Rodgers should be fine moving forward. Him being placed on IR was more of a precaution than anything, and will allow him to return for the 2018 season in top shape.

That’s exactly what the Packers want, especially after locking in their franchise quarterback to a new deal. Green Bay’s priority now will be keeping its nine-figure investment protected — and hoping he can sustain an elite level of play until he’s 40.
