How 3 plays in 3 minutes turned the Lions’ game vs Jets into a nightmare

Well, that escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand fast.

The first Monday Night Football of the game was a stinker. The New York Jets went on the road and blew out the Detroit Lions by a score of 48-17.

Although the game was large uninteresting and one-sided, there was a wild three-minute sequence where the Jets scored three touchdowns after the Lions tied the game at 17. The Jets scored on offense, defense, and special teams to quickly pull away and turn the game into a laugher.

Let’s take a closer look at exactly what the heck happened to Detroit as the game slipped away from them.

Touchdown #1: Sam Darnold threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa

Welcome back to football Quincy! After missing last year with a neck injury, Enunwa has picked up right where he left. One of his best traits is being able to make plays after the catch and eluding defenders.

He put that on display with this run after the catch for a touchdown.

Touchdown #2: Darron Lee returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown

Matt Stafford struggled tremendously Monday night, throwing four interceptions on 46 pass attempts. One of those passes was picked off by former first-round linebacker Darron Lee, who returned it 36 yards for a touchdown.

Stafford was baited into this throw. Lee was still rotating over to cover Lions running back Theo Riddick on an angle route when Stafford threw the ball. Lee jumped in front of the pass for an easy interception and an even easier return for six. To make the play even sweeter, it was the first defensive touchdown for the Jets in five seasons, the longest active streak in the NFL.

Touchdown #3: Andre Roberts scored on a 78-yard punt return

REVENGE GAME!

Andre Roberts was the return man for the Lions back in 2016. Roberts scored two touchdowns on punt returns as a Lion and brought back another one in his first game back to Ford Field.

Roberts almost stepped out, but he was able to keep his balance and score the Jets’ third touchdown in just under three minutes of game time.

For two quarters, it looked like we were in for a fun Monday Night Football match to start the season, but the game got out of hand shortly after halftime. This is a bit surprising considering the Lions have had much more success than the Jets in recent years, but Week 1 is always a little bit wacky.

Hopefully the Monday Night Football games we get the rest of the season will be a bit more competitive.
