Jack Milko has been playing golf since he was five years old. He has yet to record a hole-in-one, but he did secure an M.A. in Sports Journalism from St. Bonaventure University.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Thomas Detry is a winner on the PGA Tour for the first time. Since grabbing the lead on Friday, Detry dominated TPC Scottsdale, and nobody threatened his lead over the weekend. He played flawless golf, looking like a seasoned veteran who had won dozens of tournaments before — not a player who had never been in this position previously.

He slept on a five-shot lead on Saturday evening and said after the third round that he would need to stay in the present on Sunday, a daunting task considering all of the distractions that the WM Phoenix Open can provide. After all, this tournament has the largest attendance numbers of any tour event year in and year out, and nothing compares to the scenes at the Stadium on the Par-3 16th. The environment there can quickly turn unruly and instantly destabilize a player’s mind and routine.

The exact opposite happened to Detry, however. When he arrived at the 16th hole on Sunday, he was 21-under par and held a three-shot lead. He still had control of the tournament, but one lousy swing could have given Daniel Berger a big opening.

With the hole location all the way in the back left, the most challenging pin position on the green, Detry selected 9-iron and hit a perfect shot that was all over the stick. His ball checked and nestled an inch away, giving him the easiest birdie he would make all week. The Belgian then birdied the 17th and 18th holes, making four consecutive birdies to close out the final round en route to a masterful 6-under 65.

His victory also makes him the first Belgian-born player to win on the PGA Tour.
