Tracy Wolfson has the wildest Super Bowl story you’ve never heard

When it comes to Super Bowl history there are certain moments that stand out more than others. That is the nature of the game.

Some things stick easier in our memories while others drift away. Oftentimes these things are personal experiences, but relative to something everyone can identify with they aren’t even all necessarily something that happened that involved the game itself.

One of the things in question is the lights going out at Super Bowl LVII in New Orleans. EVERYBODY remembers where they were when it happened and what their first thought was when it did.

A few years ago I heard the great Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports talk about a bit of a prophecy for that moment in terms of her individual experience at the game. I knew that if I ever had the chance to sit down with her that I would have to ask, and thanks to our friends at Wendy’s I got it this week in the lead up to the Final Four.

It didn’t take long for me to get to this question, the opening minutes in fact, as it was something that has been on my mind. You see back at that moment in time, we are talking about 2012-2013; Tracy was still working the SEC on CBS and not the NFL sidelines as we currently know her to throughout the fall. While that was the case CBS, who was broadcasting that Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, had her go work it in other capacities.

Wolfson noted that she went to get fitted for an earpiece and microphone for standard television purposes and that the people in charge joked with her that she would not actually get into the game... unless the lights went out.

How wild is that? How absurd? We are talking about something that has only ever happened once in the history of the biggest game known to mankind and somebody completely called it when talking to Tracy.

Lo and behold, the lights obviously went out and Tracy was able to deliver an important report as a part of the process. Learning stuff like this is always fascinating in my opinion.
