It stands to reason that the most recent Masters Sunday will stick in your memory for a long time.

When asked to recall what part of the day you remember most, answers may vary. Rory McIlroy’s approach shot on 15 may finish with the majority of votes, but there were a number of details that went into one of the more epic sports days of our lifetimes.

While it felt big at the time, a moment that will probably slip through the cracks of time will be one that we didn’t find out about until hours after it happened. You surely remember that Bryson DeChambeau said in the aftermath of the chaos that Rory did not speak to him on the first tee before the final round as they were paired together. The story blew up a bit as things like this do and for the most part people have lumped it up to McIlroy being in a competitive mindset at the time and nothing more.

Rory addressed this issue on Wednesday at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. He said... exactly that.

“I don’t know what he was expecting,” McIlroy said. “We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not going to try to be his best mate out there.

“Look, everyone approaches the game [in] different ways. Yeah, like, I was focused on myself and what I needed to do. That’s really all that it was. It wasn’t anything against him. It’s just I felt that’s what I needed to do to try to get the best out of myself that day.”

There is no wrong way to approach a situation like the one McIlroy and DeChambeau were in. It was a bit strange how this whole thing developed as noted, one could argue that no one needed to know that Rory did not say a word to Bryson.

Ultimately this was another wild piece of what was a truly wild day.

Perhaps the PGA will provide a few more.
