There are different levels of seriousness when it comes to picking up golf after playing a professional sports.

Some athletes look at golf as a hobby. It helps them pass the time while exercising. There is certainly no harm in that.

Others appear to want to translate their on-field/court/ice disposition to the links. They take what made them great in another environment and channel it in a new one. This feels like a fair way to describe Joe Pavelski.

Consider that earlier this year Pavelski teed it up at Hilton Grand Vacations... and won!

It is moments and events like these that seem to make players like Joe all the more incredible on the golf course. Considering that another one is up next month in the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe... the field might be in trouble.

When I spoke to Pavelski earlier this week he humbly played down his golf game, but it is clear that he approaches the beautiful game with a focused spirit. I asked him if there was anything that he is able to translate to golf from his days in professional hockey from a mechanical standpoint and he noted that beyond trying to swing through the puck/ball, you obviously want to have your head lined up in proper position. Who among us hasn’t heard advice to keep our head down?

The American Century Championship plays home to some incredible talent from all walks of life as mentioned. If Joe Pavelski has anything to do with it, it will also be the second trophy he takes home on the golf course this year.
