The U.S. Open will get underway on Thursday out in Oakmont and based on what the major championship season has been like so far this year we are in for quite the treat.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are the two who have added to their legacies this season and with all due respect to Scottie and what he continues to do... Rory did it in a supremely historic way.

You will recall that McIlroy won the Masters and in the process accomplished the Career Grand Slam. He is the fifth player to officially reach the most rarified air that professional golf has to offer.

While nothing will ever match that in McIlroy’s career, maybe that is why he has been a bit out of form as of late, he can make some pretty impressive history with a top 10 finish at Oakmont. Justin Ray unearthed this gem on Monday morning.

Finishing in the top 10 at the U.S. Open is an insanely difficult thing to do. We all understand this. Rory has finished in the top 10 in six straight! Think about that!

Consider the six U.S. Opens that Rory has finished inside of the top 10 of. They were all intense in their own right. The winner of the tournament is in parentheses.

  • 2019: Pebble Beach (Gary Woodland)
  • 2020: Winged Foot (Bryson DeChambeau)
  • 2021: Torrey Pines (Jon Rahm)
  • 2022: Brookline (Matt Fitzpatrick)
  • 2023: Los Angeles Country Club (Wyndham Clark)
  • 2024: Pinehurst No. 2 (Bryson DeChambeau)

Prior to this stretch Rory had missed the cut in three straight U.S. Opens so he clearly found something once 2019 turned around.

Time will tell if Rory can join Ben Hogan on this particular list. He already joined him in the CGS club so he might as well!
