Report: Wyndham Clark suspended from Oakmont after damage caused during U.S. Open

Wyndham Clark has reportedly been suspended from Oakmont.

In case you somehow missed it... word began to circulate in the middle of the U.S. Open that Clark had damaged property within the locker room. A photo surfaced that was the alleged scene of it all.

Clark missed the cut at Oakmont after posting 74s in each of the first two rounds. A former U.S Open winner himself, Wyndham carries a 10-year exemption into the event which is interesting given that Oakmont is set to host the tournament again in 2033... the final year of Wyndham’s exemption.

Whether or not Wyndham plays in that U.S. Open remains to be seen, but back to the point at hand it was reported on Wednesday before the Open Championship that he has been suspended by Oakmont. He, according to a letter the club sent its members that was obtained by Golf Digest, can be reinstated if he follows a set of instruction.

“Several of you have inquired about the situation involving Wyndham Clark and the steps being taken in response to his recent behavior. Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property.

“This decision will remain in effect unless formally reconsidered and approved by the Board.

“Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board’s choosing, and the successful completion of counseling and/or anger management sessions.

“Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

There is no indication as to when this letter was sent, but obviously at the time of it there had been no repayment of damages from Wyndham which is a bit of a tough scene relative to this overall discussion. Also working against Wyndham is that he had an incident at Quail Hollow during the PGA Championship where he threw his driver after a tee shot that he did not like. The club damaged a T-Mobile sign and ironically they are a sponsor of Wyndham’s. He offered an apology after the fact and the company issued a statement of support for him.

It has been a rough season for Wyndham as he only has three finishes inside of the top 15. One of those was just last week as he finished T11 at the Genesis Scottish Open so perhaps that will bode well at Royal Portrush for him.

Wyndham had yet to say anything publicly about this at the time of this writing.
