256 NFL players got drafted this weekend. Thousands of NFL players have been drafted over the years. I feel pretty confident saying none of them have quite the story Chiefs sixth-rounder Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has from the day before his selection. The offensive lineman is also a medical school student at McGill University in his native Canada, and on Friday evening, he was ... busy. Duvernay-Tardif has been interning in the neonatal ICU of a Montreal hospital, and duty called in the middle of the draft's second night. From Canoe.ca:
Chiefs pick helped with emergency C-section day before draft
That’s a new one.
“I was supposed to be done my shift on Friday by 5:30 (p.m. EDT),” he said in a telephone interview from Montreal. “But at 5:35 there was a call in the OR for an emergency C-section of two twins that had umbilical cords wrapped around their heads.”

“I took the baby from the OR to a table. I started to dry him, gave him oxygen and took his pulse and everything,” Duvernay-Tardif said.
Duvernay-Tardif, who spoke to SB Nation in April, was projected to go earlier than the sixth round, and I kiiiinda wish he snuck into that second night, if only so we could hear that phone call. “Hi, Coach Reid? Yeah. Great to hear from you. Yeah, very excited. Hey do you mind if I put you on speaker? Got all this placenta on my hands.”
Crazy story. And good to know in case anything unusual happens during a Chiefs game in the near future.
