Kliff Kingsbury and Texas Tech go big, nominate Beyonce for Ice Bucket Challenge

Adam Silver did not go big.

The beauty of the Ice Bucket Challenge -- after the fact that it might drive people to donate money for ALS support -- is that everyone builds off the same fundamental parts. Get a bucket with some ice and/or water, get it dumped on your head, and nominate some people. Those are the basics. Every other aspect of it is your creation and, perhaps, reveals something about your character. This leads to variety. For example, here is Kliff Kingsbury doing the Challenge with his Texas Tech football team:

Here we have a lengthy, well-produced, watermarked video featuring a prolonged introduction from a handsome narrator who removes his shirt to reveal a Texas Tech-branded “Beyoncé is BAE” shirt underneath while “Drunk In Love” plays and a costumed mascot attacks him with a bucket of water, then signals for about a hundred excited people to all dump ice water on each other until a person on a cherry picker wielding a giant hose joins in the fun.

If you saw this out of context with no prior knowledge of the Ice Bucket Challenge, you’d recognize this as a large group of friends having a great time, perhaps as part of an inside joke or the aftermath of a bet of some sort.

Now here’s NBA commissioner Adam Silver following through on his challenge from USA Basketball:

Here we have grainy home video of a gaunt, solitary man in a baggy USA shirt silently dumping water on his own head while a faithful but confused yellow labrador looks on, then staring at the camera totally soaked to announce “Deke and Becky, you’re up!”

If you saw this out of context with no prior knowledge of the Ice Bucket Challenge, you’d think Adam Silver was part of some sort of sex cult initiation with Becky Hammon and Dikembe Mutombo.

And so my point is different sports people do the Ice Bucket Challenge differently.
