Bayer Leverkusen vs. Mainz: Final score 2-2, Castro rescues point for Leverkusen

Gonzalo Castro scored a very late goal to rescue a point for Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen gave up a halftime lead and needed a goal just before the end of the half to salvage a 2-2 draw with Mainz.

It looked like a scoreless first half was on the cards, but Stefan Kießling snuck in and headed in a goal in the 43rd minute. Daniel Carvajal’s pass was perfect, and Kießling headed it past Christian Wetklo to make it 1-0.

Mainz equalized in the 58th minute on a fantastic goal by Adam Szalai. Zdenek Pospech sent in a cross that Szalai stretched to reach and volley over the head of Bernd Leno. They took the lead in the 76th. Carvajal turned the ball over in his own half, and Szalai played it ahead to Marcel Risse. The substitute ripped a shot from distance past Leno to make it 2-1.

Leverkusen kept attacking and were rewarded with an equalizer three minutes from time. Wetklo made a great save on a shot by Kießling, but he was unable to save the follow up shot by Gonzalo Castro and all three points.
