Schalke vs. Nürnberg: Final score 1-0, Jefferson Farfan scores to end a perfect week for Schalke

Schalke struggled to score early but found the back of the net late to seal the victory.

It took a while, but Schalke did enough to get past Nürnberg 1-0. The win caps a great week for Schalke with wins over Borussia Dortmund in last weekend’s Revierderby and a midweek win over Arsenal in the Champions League.

Nürnberg were comfortable sitting back and defending on the road at the Veltins Arena. With starting goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer out with an achilles injury, Peter Rakovsky was in goal for one of his few starts in his career. It was beginning to look like Nürnberg were going to leave Gelsenkirchen with a point, and Rakovsky had seven saves to his name on the day.

Schalke finally broke through in the 77th minute after hard work from Julian Draxler. The midfielder fed the ball wide to Christian Fuchs, and the left back sent in a cross that Jefferson Farfan volleyed past Rakovsky to break the deadlock for the victory.

The win moves Schalke into second place within four points of Bayern Munich. Nürnberg remain on 8 points in 15th place just outside of the relegation zone. They have only picked up one point in their last six matches.
