Mainz have announced that Niko Bungert tore the ACL in his left knee during the match against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday. It won’t be known how long he’ll be out of action until after the surgery.

Bungert, 25, was taken to the University of Mainz Medical Center shortly after the match. A MRI was completed revealing the torn ACL. Once his surgery is completed, they will then decided what kind of rehabilitation plan he will proceed with.

He was injured in the 37th minute of the match when he landed after heading the ball. The attempt was actually one of Mainz’s best during the entire first half. Bungert was subbed off in the 40th minute.

The centerback has started all seven league and one cup match so far this season. Bungert became a starter at Mainz while they were in the 2.Bundesliga during the 2008-09 season and has held onto that spot ever since.
