Borussia Dortmund vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach: Final score 5-0, BVB dominate

Borussia Dortmund dominated Borussia Mönchengladbach Saturday evening on the way to a 5-0 victory. Marco Reus scored a brace with a goal on either side of halftime.

Gladbach came out attacking and nearly broke through just minutes into the match. A ball deflected off of Sebastian Kehl and found it’s way to a streaking Mike Hanke who was in alone on goal. Roman Weidenfeller was quick off his line and made a good save to keep the match scoreless.

BVB came back pressing Gladbach and looking to test Marc Andre ter Stegen. Marcel Schmelzer sent a cross into the area, and Neven Subotic leapt above everyone smashing his header off of the crossbar. Gladbach were able to clear the remaining danger without any problems.

Reus, playing his first match against his previous employer, made a great run at Simon Jantschke. He played the ball across the face of goal, but Julian Schieber was unable to get a foot on it. With only 25 minutes gone in the match, a few boos rang out around the Westfalenstadion. The home supporters have been getting agitated that they haven’t been playing the “champagne football” that they played all last season.

They had to wait 35 minutes. Reus picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch and took off toward the Gladbach goal. Alvaro Dominguez took a wild swing at the ball with his leg, but Reus just ran past him. The former Gladbach man was then one on one with Ter Stegen and calmly slotted it past him for the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later the lead was doubled thanks to the head of Neven Subotic. Jakub Błaszczykowski sent in a long cross, and Subotic headed it past Ter stegen while never leaving his feet. Reus nearly made it 3-0 just moments before halftime. He was sent through the Gladbach backline, but Ter Stegen made a sprawling foot save to keep it only 2-0 with the halftime whistle blowing.

Gladbach came out of the half with their sights on pulling a goal back. Filip Daems got down the wing before sending in a cross to Igor De Camargo. His header was heading for the back of the net, but Weidenfeller made a diving save to keep it out at the last second.

Reus made it 3-0 in favor of the champions at the 70 minute mark. He attempted a pass to Mario Götze, but the ball was deflected right back to him. Reus took a look at the goal before curling a shot over the head of Ter Stegen to the far post. Ten minutes later it was 4-0. Błaszczykowski crossed the ball to İlkay Gündoğan and he finished easily.

Not content with a 4-0 lead, BVB kept pressing forward looking for more goals. Gündoğan and Błaszczykowski swapped roles on this one, and the Polish national team captain hit the back of the net to make it 5-0.

The confidence boosting win comes at a great time for BVB. They will travel to England midweek to face Manchester City in the Champions League. Gladbach must regroup with Fenerbahçe coming to town in the Europa League.
