Schalke’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suffered a torn MCL against Borussia Dortmund

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suffered a torn MCL in Saturday’s Revierderby and will be out for some time.

Just a day after doing the double over Borussia Dortmund in the Revierderby and signing captain Benedikt Höwedes to a long term contract extension, Schalke were hit with some devastating news. Star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has suffered a torn medial collateral ligament and will be out for several weeks. The only positive out of the situation is that Huntelaar will not need surgery.

Huntelaar, 29, scored the goal in the 35th minute that would hold up for the game winner. The forward was injured in the 54th minute when he tried to clear a ball out of his own penalty area. Teemu Pukki was the substitute on Saturday and, with Ciprian Marica also recovering from an injury, the Finnish striker will have a huge role to play in how Schalke moves forward from here.

Schalke will play a massive Champions League second leg this week at the Veltins Arena against Galatasaray and will now have to do it without their leading scorer in all competitions. Höwedes said to Schalke’s website, “We’d like to wish the Hunter a good recovery and hope he’ll be available again soon.”
