Saturday was a special day for Schalke. Not only did they do the double over Borussia Dortmund with a 2-1 victory in the Revierderby, but they secured the services of defender and captain Benedikt Höwedes through June 2017. His current contract was set to expire next summer.
Benedikt Höwedes signs Schalke extension through 2017
Schalke and Benedikt Höwedes have agreed to a contract that will keep the defender in Gelsenkirchen through June 2017.

Höwedes, 25, has been with Schalke since 2001 when he was only thirteen years old. Since coming through the youth system to the first team and then the captain’s armband, Höwedes has become the face of the club. Getting him signed for a long term extension can only bode well for the club’s future.
“Schalke’s a special club. I feel really good here,” said Höwedes. The defender had been linked with a move to Bayern Munich over the last 12-18 months, but a move never materialized. “The familial environment and the togetherness with the fans really suit me.”
Höwedes’ extension comes a couple of months after the club announced a long term extension for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also. Aside from losing Lewis Holtby in the winter break, Schalke has managed to do a decent job so far in keeping their current core intact.
