Freiburg pulled off a big 1-0 victory at the Imtech Arena against Hamburg on Saturday. Jonathan Schmid broke the deadlock halfway through the second half to give Freiburg their 11th win of the season. At their current pace, they’re on track for their best season since the 2000-01 campaign.

Freiburg continued racing toward a spot in European competition next year, while Hamburg falls further behind.
If avoiding relegation last season was Christian Streich’s big introduction to being a manager, earning a place in Europe in his first full season in charge is quite the accomplishment. With six games left and only ten points separating fourth place and eleventh place, the race for the Europa League places is as wide open as it’s ever been. Of their remaining matches, only the two against Bayern Munich and Schalke stand out as very difficult.
Hamburg can only be described as being in a freefall. They’ve won once in their last six and have been outscored 17-5 in those games. Thorsten Fink needs to get his team prepared to gain a minimum of four points in their next two matches if they have any aspirations for European football next season.
We know that Hamburg is capable of winning football, as seen in their two matches against Borussia Dortmund this season. Unfortunately for Hamburg, they haven’t been “all there” offensively for a majority of the season. If Hamburg find themselves in Europe next season, they’ll have to make several moves this summer to bolster an attack that could find them embarrassed if not improved.
