Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. Greuther Fürth: Final score 1-0, De Jong scores a massive goal

Borussia Mönchengladbach pulled themselves back into contention for the Europa League with a 1-0 victory against table bottom Greuther Fürth.

Christof Koepsel

Luuk de Jong bagged his seventh goal of the season to give Borussia Mönchengladbach a big win over relegation-bound Greuther Fürth. The visitors held on for over an hour, but when Matthias Zimmermann received two yellows within a span of minutes, they fell apart defensively. Gladbach quickly capitalized with Oscar Wendt crossed the ball to De Jong for a relatively easy goal.

The three points puts Gladbach right back into the thick of things in the fight for a spot in the Europa League next season. They’re currently in seventh place, and only one point behind Eintracht Frankfurt in the sixth and final guaranteed European place for next season. (The Bundesliga’s third Europa League place goes to the winner of the DFB Pokal.) Gladbach has spent the majority of the season being consistently inconsistent. They’ve only lost once in their last six matches and have three very winnable games coming up next.

Fürth are sitting at the bottom of the table on fifteen points and are likely well on their way to being relegated. My only hope for Die Kleeblätter is that they manage to win a match in front of their home supporters before they find themselves back in the 2.Bundesliga.
