Werder Bremen vs. Schalke: Final score 0-2, Schalke on the way back to the Champions League

After a poor run of form for Schalke, it appears that they’ve finally turned around their season and are on their way back to the Champions League.

Martin Rose

Schalke received second half goals from Julian Draxler and Ciprian Marica on the way to a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen. The win moves Schalke into sole possession of the fourth and final Champions League spot and leaves Bremen floating dangerously close to the relegation zone.

The win is Schalke’s fifth in their last six matches and gives them a three point advantage over fifth place Freiburg. Die Königsblauen can fully turn their attention to league place since they are out of both the DFB Pokal and the Champions League. Jens Keller took his fair share of blame for Schalke’s poor run of form since the winter break, the manager should get fair share of the credit for their recent run of good form.

Bremen were always going to “ride or die” with Thomas Schaaf at the helm. They now sit in 14th place on 31 points, just seven points ahead of Augsburg in the relegation playoff spot. What has been the achilles heel for Bremen throughout the season? Defense. They’ve conceded the most goals in the league thus far. Die Werderaner have a big match next weekend against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Three points would go a long way toward putting the threat of relegation behind them.
