Celebrate Atlanta United’s first MLS Cup with championship gear

Atlanta, it’s time to celebrate!

For the first time in 23 years, the city — infamous for some shaky title-game performances — is a champion once again. On Saturday night, Atlanta United defeated the Portland Timbers 2-0 to claim its first MLS Cup. It’s Atlanta’s first major championship since the Braves won the World Series in 1995.

The scoring was started by MLS regular-season MVP Josef Martinez, who was able to slip away from the Timbers’ last line of defense and notch his 35th goal of the year late in the first half. Playing in front of 73,000 fans on its home turf, Atlanta United put the finishing touches on its first championship when Franco Escobar scored on a deflected free kick in the 53rd minute.
