Utah Valley, CSU Bakersfield join WAC

The WAC has added two new members in an effort to remain a recognized conference by the NCAA.

Jennifer Stewart-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The WAC has added two new schools in Utah Valley University and CSU Bakersfield. The addition of the two programs brings the total of WAC members to six, the minimum requirement to be recognized by the NCAA as an automatic bid conference, according to Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman.

The league is making the move to a non-football Division I conference in 2013, as six members will be leaving to play football elsewhere next season, coming on the heels of the departures of Fresno State, Hawaii, and Nevada last summer.

There are still two football-playing schools left in the WAC: Idaho and New Mexico State. Idaho is considering a possible return to FCS and a move to the Big Sky conference. If that happens, the WAC will need to search again for another new member. Idaho does have financial incentive to stay with the league, as Murphy pointed out. Departing members will not receive a split of the conference revenues, and the Vandals are in line to receive a large chunk of that money.
