Todd Mayo, the younger brother of Dallas Mavericks' guard O.J. Mayo and currently a sophomore for the Marquette Golden Eagles, has been ruled academically ineligible for the first semester. Mayo will be unable to play or practice this semester.

Todd Mayo, the younger brother of Dallas Mavericks’ guard O.J. Mayo, has been declared academically ineligible, and will be unable to play or practice the first semester for Marquette.

Coach Buzz Williams was disappointed that Mayo “had rendered himself academically ineligible” but left the door open for Mayo to return once he is in good academic standing:
“Todd understands success in our program requires a sincere commitment to excellence on and off the floor. I’m extremely disappointed he’s put himself in this position, but he has the full support of our program as he works to improve.”
This is not Mayo’s first suspension since joining the Golden Eagles. Williams sent the guard home last season during the second semester, frustrated by Mayo’s inability to fit in Marquette’s system. Teammates and coaches had complained about Mayo’s entitled attitude and unwillingness to be apart of the team.
Mayo average 7.9 points per game last season, and with the departures of Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom, looked to have an expanded role off the bench this year. Marquette will open its season against Ohio State on Friday night in Charleston, S.C., in the second annual Carrier Classic.
