Xavier wears Sandy Hook jerseys

The Xavier basketball team is wearing special Sandy Hook jerseys just a little over a week after the tragic school shooting.

In a pretty fantastic and touching gesture, the Xavier men’s basketball team paid tribute to Sandy Hook Elementary on Saturday afternoon. Just a little over a week after the incredibly tragic shooting at the Connecticut elementary school-- which took the lives of 26 people, including 20 children -- the Xavier hoops team replaced its own school name with “Sandy Hook” on the front of its jerseys for a Saturday matchup against Wofford.

Xavier head coach Chris Mack also tweeted that the game uniforms would be up for auction on the team’s website. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

All in all, it’s a very cool gesture from Xavier, and another example of sports teams rallying around the town in the wake of a unfathomable tragedy.

Our own Amy K. Nelson visited Newtown on Monday. Read her dispatch and watch the video, which spotlights the Newtown Youth Academy, a place where kids are able to just be kids again in the wake of the tragedy.
