Few players have meant more to Syracuse basketball over the years than Carmelo Anthony. He led the program to its one and only national title in 2003, which is saying something considering the talent coach Jim Boeheim has had over the years.
Syracuse to retire Carmelo Anthony’s jersey
Anthony, who led the school to its lone national title in 2003, will have his jersey hanging in the Carrier Dome rafters.

While he only stuck around for his freshman campaign, those around the program still feel his contributions warrant a place in the Carrier Dome rafters. According to this report from ESPN New York, Syracuse has decided to retire Anthony’s jersey this season. The specific date has yet to be determined, although the ceremony will take place at one of Cuse’s four home games in February.
Prior to the March Madness run in 2003, Anthony averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds a night.
Carmelo has kept his ties to the program over the years. Not only does he remain close to coach Boeheim, but he also generously donated $3 million to help build a new facility.
“It’s always good to catch up with him,” (Anthony) said. “We have spent a lot of time together this summer in the Olympics and stuff. It’s always good to see him and have him back in Syracuse. We talk once in a while.”
