No. 8 Gonzaga vs. Portland final score: Bulldogs rout Pilots, 71-49

Gonzaga didn’t look past Portland in anticipation of its showdown with Butler on Saturday. The Bulldogs took care of business against the Pilots on the road.

The No. 8 Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the Portland Pilots, 71-49, in West Coast Conference action on Thursday night at the Earle A. Chiles Center in Portland, Ore.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 16-2 lead seven minutes into the game, setting a precedent that was only challenged once throughout the remainder of the contest. After the Pilots cut the Bulldogs’ lead to five points with less than two minutes left in the first half, Gonzaga extended its lead back out to double digits by closing the half on a 5-0 run.

Kelly Olynyk scored 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting and pulled down five rebounds for the Bulldogs, who improved to 17-1 on the season, including 4-0 in conference play. Kevin Bailey led Portland with 16 points in the losing effort.

Next up for Gonzaga is a showdown with No. 13 Butler on Saturday in Indianapolis. Portland will stay home to face St. Mary’s, which overcame a 20-4 deficit in its last outing to beat BYU, on the same day.
