As the Orlando Sentinel writes, Berry only took one official college visit. He also had scholarship offers from the Kansas Jayhawks, Ohio State Buckeyes, N.C. State Wolfpack, Florida State Seminoles and Florida Gators.
“I told everybody North Carolina was my dream school all during my recruiting process,” Berry said in a phone interview with the Sentinel on Monday. “Now I get to fulfill my dream.”
Berry is the first sophomore in state history to be named Florida Mr. Basketball. Inside Carolina has some footage of Berry playing during the Peach Jam. Here is some footage from Home Town Hoops.
He is averaging 27.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.7 steals for Lake Highland Prep, who are currently ranked as the top team in Class 4A basketball in Florida. Berry missed five games in December after having successful surgery for a torn meniscus. The team is 10-0 when he is in the lineup.
Berry is the first 2014 recruit to commit to the Tar Heels, although North Carolina reportedly has offered four other players scholarships including top prospect Jahlil Okafor.
