Akron won’t play in uniforms with Twitter handles

The Akron Zips won’t be playing in jerseys with the team’s Twitter handle on the back, but will wear them during warm-ups as part of a Social Media Night promotion on Saturday.

On Monday, the Akron Zips revealed what appeared to be jerseys with the men's basketball Twitter handle, @ZipsMBB, instead of the players' last names. Since then, the team issued a statement clarifying that the handle will be used on the shooting shirts used during warm-ups, but not on official game jerseys.

As it turns out, the school contacted the NCAA to see if the jersey prototype was allowed and the NCAA ruled that it wasn't. The jerseys were supposed to be worn as part of the promotion for Social Media Night against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday. It appears the two sides settled by letting the Zips wear the jerseys during warm-ups.

The confusion began when the school sent out photographs of the jersey to members of the national media. According to the school’s statement, members of the national media also received their own jerseys personalized with their Twitter handles as part of the promotion.
