No. 19 NC State vs. Virginia final score: Cavaliers pick up 58-55 win

In what was a closely contested battle between two quality ACC foes, the Cavaliers came out on top with the narrow victory.

USA TODAY Sports

The Virginia Cavaliers knocked off the North Carolina St. Wolfpack, 58-55, in front of a rowdy crowd at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Cavaliers are now 5-2 in ACC play play.

The Cavaliers and Wolfpack were closely contested throughout. With just 27 seconds remaining on the clock, Jontel Evans hit two free throws to give UVA a 58-55 lead. The Wolfpack had a chance to tie it late, but a three-point attempt from Scott Wood missed everything as the clock neared zero. Virginia secured the ball and chucked it down the court as the buzzer sounded.

Joe Harris led Virginia with 22 points. Junior forward Akil Mitchell had a double-double, racking up 14 points and 12 rebounds. As a team, the Cavaliers hit just 40 percent of their shots and went 5-for-20 from behind the 3-point arc.

C.J. Leslie had a monster game for NC State, scoring 20 points and bringing down 14 rebounds. Richard Howell chipped in with 12 points, 11 boards and six assists. Junior guard Lorenzo Brown, who averages 13.2 points a game, was injured his ankle and was unable to play most of the second half.
