Kelly Oubre commits to Kansas

Findlay Prep (Nev.) forward Kelly Oubre has committed to the University of Kansas.

The 2014 prospect chose the Jayhawks over Kentucky and put an end to any speculation in a tweet early Wednesday afternoon.

Oubre has skyrocketed up the recruiting service rankings over the last few months and ended up at No. 4 in his class according to 247sports. ESPN ranked him at No. 10 while Rivals pegged him at 12.

Though elite programs around the country chased Oubre, one factor that finally sold him on Kansas was the opportunity to replace top 2013 recruit Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins will almost certainly leave for the NBA after his freshman season, leaving a hole on the wing:

“Of course [Wiggins is] going to the league [after this year], so they just need another big wing to come in and just fill that spot,” Oubre told SNY.tv. “[Kansas coach Bill Self] pretty much told me everything’s there for me.”

He still has a season left of high school, but fans in Lawrence can expect to get a player next year who can shoot the three and drive to the basket. Scout.com praises just about every aspect of his game:

He’s a quick and increasingly aggressive slasher who excels at the jumpstop that leads into a tomahawk slam. He’s especially fond of baseline drives, and his ability to get above defenders results in numerous fouls along with and-ones. He’s also a very good shooter from long-range. His leaping ability has improved significantly, and he’s able to climb the offensive glass for putbacks and tip-dunks. He excels defensively as well.

Oubre is Bill Self’s first 2014 commitment as the Jayhawks remain in the hunt for several other top recruits. Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones and Cliff Alexander are each considering Kansas as well.

Oubre has been on the national radar for a few years now, but he began to fly up the rankings in the spring and summer. When he joined Houston Hoops on the 2013 Nike EYBL circuit, many didn’t even rank him in the top 50 nationally. But coaches soon saw a more confident and assertive player, according to Scout.com. He also impressed at the prestigious NBPA Top 100 Camp, cementing his place in the upper echelon of 2014 talent.
