Kevin Ware likely to redshirt for Louisville Cardinals

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino said the team could shut down guard Kevin Ware for the year.

After suffering a broken leg in last year's NCAA Tournament and returning this season, Louisville guard Kevin Ware is likely to be shut down for the rest of the year because of an injury to the same leg, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reports. Though sources told ESPN that the Cardinals staff is "leaning heavily" in that direction, coach Rick Pitino said in a news conference on Monday that the decision was not 100 percent.

Card Chronicle: More on the Cardinals

Ware suffered a compound fracture to his leg on March 31 in an 85-63 win against the Duke Blue Devils during last year's national championship run. He returned on Nov. 15 in Louisville's third game of the season to play in nine games as a reserve.

Ware has missed the last two games after being kicked in the right shin, and has been wearing a walking boot and using crutches. The injury was initially not considered to be serious.

Ware was averaging 1.7 points per game while playing just 5.9 minutes as the Cardinals slowly brought him back from the broken leg. Last season, the junior out of New York played 16.6 minutes per game off the bench and averaged 4.5 points per outing.

The likely loss isn’t the only one hitting Louisville. Forward Chane Behanan was dismissed from the team on Monday after a violation of university rules.
